Ian Hunter – Why Isn’t He Playing Stadiums?

Photobucket

One day, I walk into Starr records in Oshawa. I have a few bucks in my pocket and I’m in a mood for some good songs. I go up to Mike (the sometimes grumpy but very knowledgeable owner) and I ask if he’s got any recommendations. He points me to You’re Never Alone With a Schizophrenic. In his opinion, it is a shithouse full of good. I didn’t really know Ian’s work but I thought, what the heck. (Mott The Hoople was off my radar in those days) Been a fan ever since.
10 years later I’m working at Warner Brothers. There’s a really good writer working a temp job in the next office. We happen to need a really good writer at that moment, so I wander over to where Steve B. is working to tell him we’d like to offer him a position on our sitcom. From never having met, we are talking about how much we like both like Ian Hunter within literally 90 seconds.
It’s amazing to me that Ian wasn’t bigger in this country. Foreigner are just Ian Hunter light. His biggest hit was Once Bitten, Twice Shy and even then another band had to cover it before it really sold. Hopefully he made a lot of money of Cleveland Rocks (Drew Cary Show). The man has earned his dollars. But, if there were any justice in this world, we’d all be in jail.

All Of the Good Ones Are Taken – I went to see the great man at the Key Club in L.A. At one point during the show he mentioned the All Of the Good Ones Are Taken album that he’d recorded in the 80’s. He said it was rubbish but he liked one song. I believe Mr. Hunter is completely wrong. All of the Good Ones is perhaps my favorite of his album. Exhibit A: The title song. It’s a wonderful tune. Touching when you hear it. When you see the video, you maybe a little more confusing. He seems to spend more time with a big fat bald guy than the girl of his dreams. Despite that, it’s a magnificent song that has stuck with me lo these many years. Do suppose he was referring to this video when he said it was rubbish?

Ian Hunter – Mick Ronson Band – American Music – This wasn’t one of my favorite albums but it does have a couple of songs to recommend it. This is one or Ian’s patented stadium ready songs.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy - His big one off the first solo album. Once written, twice a hit...and deservedly so. I'm sure this song will keep Ian in very nice sunglasses for the rest of his days.

Cleveland Rocks – Classic Rock. How does this not fill stadiums even today?

Just Another Night – The lead off song from You’re Never Alone With a Schizophrenic. Thus the very first Ian Hunter song I ever heard. It was a very good start.

Photobucket

Old Records Never Die – Ian does big, soppy ballads that actually work. I’m a huge fan of this song. I truly believe than this is Ian’s philosophy. He’s a giant, giant music fan. Short Back and Sides isn’t his best album but it puts most of his competition to shame.

Irene Wilde – Off his live album. Heartbreaking ballad. He does them so well. And haven’t we all wanted to become a worldwide success to make all those girls. who couldn’t have cared less, eat their own hands off in regret.

We Gotta Get Out of Here – This video got quite a bit of play at the time, and why not? It’s a great song. One of the truly classic voices in rock and roll. It was born to scream out a hook.

When the World Was Round – How many guys write a song this good in their late 60’s? He’s had his ups and downs but this fucker has stood the test of time. When most of his contemporaries are dead, playing Vegas or both, Ian is still putting out music than means something. (cool video, too)

Very cool to hear of folks mesmerized by his ballads - took me a few years to appreciate them, honestly.  I was a young rocker when I 'discovered' MTH in '74 - I just wanted to rock.  "3000 Miles From Here" floored me though when I first heard it - still does 35 yrs later....

Had the pleasure of seeing Mssr. Hunter in Santa Clara in 1986.  One of the best shows I ever saw.  Had the crowd going nuts on the rockers, mesmerized by the ballads ("Ships" - 100 times better than the version on the album).  Very funny, very cool guy.

Man, what a great walk down my own personal memory lane.   I was a crushed MTH fan who missed seeing them live before their demise(and had tickets to see them - then he had a breakdown).   When his solo album arrived and I put it on, I was like "Man..this is gonna be great!"

It was.

To me, I had solo Ian now - and then what left of MTH w/ "Mott", whose two albums I will defend to my last dying breath....Brother JB and I had the pleasure of seeing him at SXSW a few years ago and he was still vital...and I will never tire of picking up another new Ian album, ever....I own 'em all and, importantly, visit a good majority of them often....

All the Good Ones are Taken is just a fabulous album.  He should be in the Hall of Fame. But that's a whole other area of frustration.

I've been an Ian Hunter fan for a long time, and "All of the Good Ones" is one of my favorites. I think that's a hilarious video, I haven't seen it in about 25 years.

It's never bothered me that he's never filled stadiums (and at age 72, he probably thinks it's just as well now). Unique talents like Hunter rarely do.

Are you thinking of the Overnight Angels?  That was a truly horrible album>>

No but you are on the track, somebody please help me.

It was one of these one-off superstar combos (....like Keith Richards and the New Barbarians, anybody remember those days?...)  Like I said Todd, Ian Hunter, Jim Carroll and WHO?...the 4th guy was a real big name and I can't believe I'm forgetting it.

Could the Beatles be as huge as they showed up now?

Well....what kind of rock landscape (w/r/t all the music that came before them) would they be entering?

They kind of invented it, along with others, but mostly them for awhile.

We have a chicken and egg type question here ;<)

Amen!  Introduced to Mr. Hunter in the college radio days, by a very cool radio prof, back in the day.  His coolness reigns today, as he recently sung back up on one of my favorite folkies, Amy Speace.

I just feel that quality work should be rewarded and Ian has a huge catalogue of top notch material.  While I prefer to see artists in smaller venues (and I saw Ian twice at the Key Club), it would be nice if they got the recognition and money they deserve. My lament is that talent isn't recognized.  (not by the majority)  Could the Beatles, if they were starting out, fill statiums?  I doubt it.  Their kind of tuneful music has no worth today.  There are some wonderful pop bands that don't draw flies.

Are you thinking of the Overnight Angels?  That was a truly horrible album.

I'm drawing a blank now, help me fellow geezers.

It was a 4-man band: Ian Hunter, Todd Rundgren, Jim Carrol (r.i.p.) and someone else.  And they had a name for the band, what was it?

It was one of thsose 1-off summer tour type things, and it came to the Dr Pepper Pier stage on the west side of NYC, early 80s-ish...

Ian Hunter's great and all, but I find the "how does he not fill stadiums" to be a curious lament on a few levels.

A) very few of the CURRENT best rock bands can fill a stadium or even an arena

B) Ian's a good few decades past his prime though I love his work.  Could you not make the same lament about HUNDREDS of his contemporaries?  To pick one guy who briefly played in a live band with Ian....how about Todd Rundgren.

C) Do you WANT to actually attend a show in a stadium? Wouldn't you prefer a nice bar?

D) Check out where even the Who played on their last reunion tour....places like Mohegan Sun, a good bit smaller than the old arenas, never mind stadiums...
