Dr. Feelgood – Malpractice (The All-Time Greatest Garage Band)

Photobucket

I’m not a huge fan of garage and pub bands. There are many, many records dedicated to the energetic racket pounded out by lo-fi knuckleheads from the early 60’s through to God knows when. There are talented exceptions to this annoying band-clash brigade, however. Dr. Feelgood is certainly one of them. Originally from Canvey Island in England, these guys really rocked the house. They played straight ahead rock and roll but with some flair. They did original songs (the best written by guitarist Wilko Johnston) as well as balls-to-the-wall covers.
I’ve already talked a little about this band in my tribute to Star Records. I do believe however, that Malpractice deserves its own Radio Vickers broadcast. This was the first of their albums I purchased, and I hit the jackpot. This album had it all. The pub rock drive that had made them famous and the playing and writing of Wilko Johnston. When I first came to L.A., I would go down and purchase records at the late, great Moby Disc, even though I had no record player. This was one of the first albums I bought in City of Angels. I quickly took it over to my girlfriend’s apartment, so I could listen to it on the weekends. Aren’t girls great!?

I Can Tell – The first Dr. Feelgood song I ever heard. Is it any wonder I got hooked on these guys? A really catchy, nicely done rocker.

Back in the Night – A Wilko Johnston number. He has that great guitar style that make these song so special.

Another Man – Again, lovely guitar work. Mr. Brilleaux does a great job of singing this little number of betrayal.

Don’t Let Your Daddy Know – The perfect song and the perfect advice. If you like guitar/harp driven rock/boogie, then this is the song for you.

Going Back Home – This moves along at a pace. Great harp work in this one. Buy this album, you will not be disappointed!

Perhaps "Pub Band" which is sort of the British equivalent of Garage Band here.  The Brinsely Schwarz, Kurdsaal Flyers, Eddie and the Hotrods kind of feel.  Ironically, the better a garage band is, the less they sound like a garage band.

I've just never heard them called "garage" and their sound to me does not fit in nicely with the stalwarts of the genre-- a little too polished, no fuzz, etc.  To sum up, a great little Rock & Roll combo?  Yes.  The greatest Garage Band of All-Time?  No.

Oil City Confidential looks terrific.  Thanks, I'll check it out.

I actually quite like the Seeds.  There are good garage bands and bad ones.  Garage band has become a catch phrase for bands that don't play very well and are terribly recorded.  Some people seem to think this adds some authenticity to their rock and roll.  I'm not among their number.  Dr. Feelgood were certainly not poor players or badly recorded.  Many have called the "Garage".  I don't really see them as pop.  A little to hard edged, perhaps?  They're not quite blues.  They're just good.

This is a pretty good doc, by the way...

Dr. Feelgood are pretty underated, but I would never call them a garage rock band.  Pub band, sure.  It's obvious from your first paragraph that you're not a fan of the genre, but I would give the title to the Sonics or the Seeds, or the Music Machine or any of the dozens of other bands on the first two Nuggets box sets.

I remember liking the Del Fuegos back in the day. I think I have them on album and CD.  I'll have to check.  Did they do an ad for Miller Time or something?  Don't remember the Dirtbombs as well.  I'll have to look them up.  Some of Wilco's Solid Senders material also holds up well.

How about the Dirtbombs?

Definitely agree with Discount Romance that Dr Feelgood were a great band. I think Del Fuegos were at times very good. Dr Feelgood were a Bar Band or Pub Band, tighter and way more seasoned as a live unit than most Garage bands. When music is this euphoric, semantics don't matter, but I wouldn't put the 2 bands in the same category.

Would you say the Del Fuegos are a garage band?
