Dr. Feelgood – Malpractice (The All-Time Greatest Garage Band)

Photobucket

I’m not a huge fan of garage and pub bands. There are many, many records dedicated to the energetic racket pounded out by lo-fi knuckleheads from the early 60’s through to God knows when. There are talented exceptions to this annoying band-clash brigade, however. Dr. Feelgood is certainly one of… Continue

Great Canadian Singles – 3’s A Crowd

Photobucket
Having grown up in Canada, I had the fortune to be exposed to a lot of songs that the rest of the world missed out on. Canadian Content Laws have done wonders for Canadian artists, but it’s also done wonders for Canadian music fans. (sorry Libertarians) There was some pretty fine vinyl put out in the Great… Continue

Middle Brother – A Pretty Darned Good Band!

Photobucket

So, last night, I decided to check out some of the performances from the 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions on Youtube. There wasn’t much to see. Too early. There were videos by a band called Middle Brother, however. I had not heard of these gentlemen but curiosity got the better of me and I… Continue

Songs That Must Be Heard - Dar Williams

For whatever reason (I think I’ve probably expounded upon this topic enough) some brilliant songs, despite their obvious brilliance, fail to become hits. Radio Vickers is out to rectify that situation, by giving these songs their day in the sun. Hopefully, people in the U.S. and the other approximately 45 countries that have tuned us in, will see the merit in some of this work and seek to monetarily reward these great artists by purchasing their musical fare. …

The Fugs – The Band that Loved Boobs A Lot!

Photobucket

I was a late comer to The Fugs. I think I read something about them in a magazine. Hadn’t even really heard of them until I was in L.A. but now I was intrigued. I can remember dragging Judith to Moby Disc and to purchase Fugs albums. They were only available as Italian imports and the…

Fischer Z – Going Deaf For a Living

Photobucket

I’m sitting in my dingy (and I’m not exaggerating) apartment in Oshawa Ontario, being poisoned to death by the emissions from the GM plant right next door. The radio is on (CFNY, of course) and I’m listening to a song that really catches my ear. It’s by a band called Fischer Z.… Continue

Blue Cheer – Oh Pleasant Hope

Photobucket

I was in the late, great Moby Disc one day, scouring the used racks an I came upon an interesting album cover. It was called “Oh Pleasant Hope” and had a sort of psychedelic, quilty cover. And it was only $1.99, so I picked it up. While I was paying for it, and the guy behind… Continue

Slade - Keep Your Hands off My Power Supply

The year is probably 1975 and I’m buying some albums out of a stack left at the MCVI radio station by Kevin G. I pick three, as I recall. A double live by Grand Funk, One Fine Morning by Lighthouse (see earlier blog) and Slade Alive. Two of these three could not have been better purchases.

When my ears got a hold of the gut blasting pop noise and Noddy Holder’s jet engine of a voice coming out of that Alive album, I was hooked. For years I’ve pestered and prodded my friends in the hopes… Continue

Harry Nilsson – I Sang, I Drank, I’m Dead

Photobucket

Rock and roll is replete with victims. One of the saddest of those maybe Harry Nilsson. So much talent. So much booze. So many cigarettes. Goodbye.

The first time I ever laid ears on those gorgeous tonsils, I was touring around Europe with my parents. Coconut was on Radio Luxembourg several… Continue

Julianna Raye – Something Peculiar (a truly great album - Produced by Jeff Lynne!)

Photobucket

One day, many years ago, my wife called me from the car. She’d been listening to Morning Becomes Eclectic and she’d just heard a song that pricked up her ears. The song was called, “I Will Get You Back”. Judith didn’t know who it was by, but she knew that she liked what she heard. Never one to let… Continue

Bill Nelson - Quit Dreaming and Get on the Beam

Just before Bill Nelson bought an A-ticket to whackyville, he put out a couple of excellent albums. Sound on Sound was a marvelous trip into the future of music. Quit Dreaming and Get on the Beam would be the last of his great albums. I can remember seeing it on the… Continue

Here Comes the Fludd! (One of the Truly Great Canadian Bands)

Photobucket
It’s 1975 and I have 20 dollars, so I’m in a record store. I’m in downtown Oshawa, in Starr Records. What to choose? I’m sure I must have thumbed through the available musical fare for a considerable time. In the end, I decided to purchase (the just released) Physical Graffiti and “On” by Fludd. Of the… Continue

Dave Davies – Kink (book review)

Photobucket

First off, I know that this album was put out 15 years ago, but I just got around to reading it. Perhaps others haven’t gotten around to it yet. Thus my review.

The book has some very interesting stuff in it. An insight into the very complicated relationship he has with his brother. His sex… Continue

The Two Cellos – Largo – Concert Review

I’ve just seen The Two Cellos at Largo tonight. The show was exceptionally short, so I have plenty of time to write my review before turning in.

To begin with, their show is a lot of fun…and they certainly leave you wanting more. These two guys have come upon a neat… Continue

I totally met Michael Nesmith and I didn't pass out

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
