Reviews for Solipsism:

"Ah, fellow Dukes of Stratosphear heads! I was very happy to see them as your first influence. I really appreciate what you are all doing. Your recordings are imaginative and well executed. ‘Act 2 Scene 3’ - is very Colin Moulding-esque.  I like it, although I think ‘Compromise’ is my favorite track. Keep up the good work!”

Chris Manning (Jellyfish)

"This criminally overlooked band from Australia has been rightly described as "like Crowded House being bent over the bar by XTC." The band is represented by imaginative animated-style characters (they have a comic strip posted on myspace regularly) and has a combination of influences old and new bathed in sugary sweet pop. It's almost like discovering The Wiggles, except it's for adults.
Opening with the commercially viable pop of "Big Celebrity," it shifts into "Skylarking" mode with "If You'll Be My Adam" with multiple melodic twists and layered choral effects it makes an excellent single. "When She's Got Her Blackboots" is another winner and invites comparisons to those Finn brothers. Guitarist/vocalist Stanton has a soothing vocal on "One Million Shirts" that proves to be a brilliant melodic ballad. The dramatic harmonies on "Act 2 Scene 3" are a treat as well. The quality of the songwriting flirts with novelty at times ("She's So Rude") or even sixties parody ("Didn't Know Dumb") but never fails to get your toe tapping. The title, "Solipsism" is the philosophical idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist. Here is an album that proves great power pop exists too."

Powerpopaholic

"What a stunning piece of work this is!  I am very, very impressed! Memorable tunes, wonderful vocals, crisp production... a well crafted disc of excellence in my book!"

ShockPop/ScrubRadio

"WOW!!!  XTC ALERT!!!  Psych-pop folk glam baroque'n'roll one-man band from Sydney Australia  that lives in a cartoon strip (check out their MySpace page).  Contained here is a first-rate heady cocktail of the Beatles, the Kinks, the Move, and the Easybeats with a twist of Ziggy Stardust and Lou Reed and the melodic flair of Jellyfish and the Divine Comedy."

Kool Kat Records

"This Aussie band is adept at channeling the “ghosts” of David Bowie, XTC and Crowded House. With cartoon characters and tongue-in-cheek humor, Skeleton Staff aim to tickle your funny bone whilst delivering classic pop hi-jinks. So melodies are paramount, with jaunty rhythms a top priority. Will definitely put a smile on your face. Highlights – If You’ll Be My Adam, One Million Shirtsleeves, Compromise."

Blurborama - The Power of Pop

‘In the glam rock war between Bolan and Bowie, the winner is Skeleton Staff’

Wow, that's a great story! Seems too good to be true, but worth retelling. My friend Kevin has a Rickenbacker. He played it in a silly band called Furiously Stiff. The band was made up of my high school friends, played in dive bars in lower Manhattan in the mid-90s. I was their "manager" (though I managed to do very little). Their career highlight was being asked back to CBGB to play on a Wednesday at 1:00 a.m. It was fun while it lasted.

Wow, that's so cool! How did you manage to get one of Marty-Wilson Piper's guitars?!? "Under the Milky Way" was a hit in the States in '88. I saw them in NYC on that tour. Someone threw a Milky Way candy bar at the stage and hit Steve's mic in the middle of a song. He was not happy about that. I guess Kim met Steve briefly. I don't think he met Russell (x-Crystal Set) though.

Just curious -- are you acquainted/familiar with the Kilbey family? My cousin Kim befriended John Kilbey and his then-band Bhagavad Guitars when we visited Australia in '87. I made contact with John when I was back in Oz in '01, but wasn't able to meet up with him. (I was in Melbourne and he was in Sydney.) Incidentally, Kim's full name is Melbourne Kimbel Harwood III. Four generations of men in my family were named Melbourne. (My great-grandfather was Melbourne Porter Smith Harwood.) Strange but true.

Thanks for the friend request!  I dig the 'toons and tunes!  Your drawing style brings to mind two Boston-area artists, Shelli Paroline and Braden D. Lamb.  Your characters' hands & fingers reminds me of Mort Drucker.  Anyway, continued success!

I was actually about to say something along those very lines! :D Anyway, due to a couple technical reasons I have nothing on my light table right now. If you'd ever consider such a thing, I'd be happy to lend a hand doing some 'mations, and I might have a couple friends also going to school for animation that may be willing to help too~ ;) Ya never know! Could be real cool. You ever animate your fellas before?

Wow...I'm a big fan already.   Can you get a gig at The Spider House Cafe in Austin for next year's SXSW??   Many fab Aussie bands play there....saw Dom Mariani (DM3), Grand Atlantic, & Chevelles this year.   Would love to see you here in the great state of Texas!!

Wow, to say I'm impressed is a considerable understatement. I'm hearing different influences all over the place: "Compromise" sounds like the best song Oasis never did, while "I'll Take the Money" makes me think of vintage Squeeze updated for this century.  You obviously understand that great music starts not with a particular style, but with great songs. The exquisite production details are the icing on the cake. (The Bowie-style guitars on "Big Celebrity", the dueling violins midway through "Compromise".) I can't imagine anybody not liking this ...
