Where are they now...

Jimmy & the Mustangs- somewhat of a Stray Cats knockoff from Los Angeles in the 80's, but the Hey Little Girl album is really sun to listen to or play along with. I finally found it on Ebay after searching for years. Jimmy relocated the band to Austin,TX and has a My Space page. Not much video of the old stuff.

When I was a kid back in NY, I fell in love with a local band called Finn & The Sharks. They were right there with Robert Gordon back in the day, but didn't quite make it as far as he did. Me and my buddies would go see 'em at a club in Nyack, NY called "The Office" every Friday night. man they kicked ass. Here, thanks to the magic of Youtube, they are:

If I had to pick just one quintessential rockabilly song, it just might be. . .

Roy: I loves me some Bellfuries!! I had no idea they played Surfside. That pisses me off. Their first CD is never out of my player for long--there isn't a bad note on it. Their followup is a lot different though. They've gone away from the rockabilly influence to a more 60's pop sound these days. You're right, as far as just fantastic melodic pop rockabilly, it don't get much better than the Bellfuries. If you dig them, check out some of Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Boys' stuff,
or Go Cat Go!

During my first/second year working at Surfside 7, I saw a lot of surf and rockabilly bands come through. Quite frankly, most were such low quality, I grew jaded towards both genres. Except-- the Bellfuries. Not a surf band and not a full throttle go-daddy-go kinda rockabilly band either. More of a 50's/early 60's crooning Hank-Ricky Nelson-Johnny Rivers vibe. There's even some Sam Cooke in there too. The kind of band you take a girl on a first date to-- and WIN!

Another fav. Hot Boogie Chillun (RIP). Raw, bluesy, amped-up rock-n-roll from Germany. This clip doesn't represent their most rockabilly output (you try finding footage of these guys). If you can get your hands on their albums, which are near impossible to find, do yourself a favor.

Roy: Cool clip. Never heard of The Twisters (clip says they're from Finland). "Why Don't Somebody" is a cover of Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm Rockers though (70's teddy boy band out of South Wales).

Man, I stumbled on this great band/clip. Anyone know more about them? The Twisters "Why Don't Somebody" (1980).
