Power Pop In The Mainstream

Started by Scott Larson. Last reply by maximum jack Jan 7, 2012. 31 Replies

Power Pop is a genre unto itself, however every now and then a mainstream music artist will dip their toes in its effervescent pool of hookyness.  My challenge to you is to make a list of mainstream…Continue

The first two Wire Train albums featured Kurt Herr on guitar and he definitely had an influence on their sound. Kevin Hunter continued on with the band though and really brought out his own sound. They just released the Snug album on ITunes only since it was rejected by their label back in 1993 for being too "weird". I must say, in this case I agree with the record company. I have everything else they have ever done, but this one takes some getting used to.

Speaking of Wire Train, many fans know the real 80's chorused/delayed stuff from the 80's. but there is a lot of good material from their later albums. They played a reunion show last year in San Fran and I begged my wife to fly out there with me for it, but she thought I was crazy. Had this RRT site been up and I followed "The Manifesto", I would have jumped on a plane by myself and caught the show.

Kind of ironic that both Tim Smith from Jellyfish and Jeffrey Trott of the later WT lineup both ended up playing with SHeryl Crowe. Small musical world!

@BB- looking thru the sale CD's and couldn't believe you have the Lucy Show- Mania CD. I saw these guys open for Love & Rockets with The Bolshoi and have the original LP and CD. I'm a huge Wire Train fan too, so these songs bring back lots of good memories. Definitely a desert island disc. Thanks

Yes, The Monkees. They may not have played their own instruments all the time, but their voices blended so well and they had one hell of a songwriting team and studio band working for them. Pretty low down on the power pop tree, close to the roots.

I'll second Grand Prix as their TF favorite. Followed closely by Songs From Northern Britain.

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
