Power Pop In The Mainstream

Started by Scott Larson. Last reply by maximum jack Jan 7, 2012. 31 Replies

Power Pop is a genre unto itself, however every now and then a mainstream music artist will dip their toes in its effervescent pool of hookyness.  My challenge to you is to make a list of mainstream…Continue

David Myhr of the late, great Stockholm band The Merrymakers today released the first single from his forthcoming LP Soundshine , due out later this year. Listen to "Got You Where He Wanted" via Bandcamp below and download if you like (no email required). I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Greetings fellow Power Poppers! I really didn't know I was "Power Pop" until I released my album Carol Was Here and started to get some very positive reviews.  Anyway, Big Star, Badfinger? Great yet tragic tales.  They coulda been somebody; they coulda been a contenda...  How about Matthew Sweet?  Girlfriend through 100% Fun.. AWESOME.  Is it OK to still love The Beatles, The Who?  How about The Jam?  Todd Rundgren?  It's all good (well actually, GREAT).  Anyway, hopefully I've added something to the Power Pop universe.  Please check out my website www.CarolWasHere.com.  From there you can get to almost all places Carol WAS (is)...  Enjoy...

check out this group - they're called 'Smoke Feathers' and the cover the Big Star classic 'The Ballad Of El Goodo".

The singer sounds like Alex Chilton in a way...

Hollerado has great pop chops and inspired no-budget videos. Their disc is also done up with some brilliant DIY packaging... stuffed in a bagful of confetti with a bunch of goodies (stickers, temporary tattoos, all sorts of nonsense. Just straight up fun stuff!

Why Can't It Be by The Names has to be one of the best ever singles. Most of us are familiar with the a-side because it was included on compilation D.I.Y.: Come Out and Play: American Power Pop I (1975-78).

Herewith the both sides, though.

If there was any justice in the world they would have followed w/ string of excellent singles as well as albums. However, this 7" turned out to be their sole legacy.

I totally met Michael Nesmith and I didn't pass out

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
