I love most of the music to be created in Michigan, Motown, John Lee Hooker, MC5, The Stooges, Grand Funk, Seger, ?, The Gories, and many of the current bands. but which one is the best?  Continue

Haven't been back to Michigan in too many years, but I'm one a dem Yoopers, eh?! Grew up in da Soo, but had some cousins down Detroit way that would hook me up with some sweet 45's in the late 60's and 70's. Michigan ROCKS!

Of course, kudos go to all the artists of Motown for getting things started, and artists and bands like Sponge, Verve Pipe, Kid Rock, and Eminem for perpetuating the slogan that "Michigan Rocks The World!"

Without a doubt, the best era was the mid-70's through the mid-80's. That's when rock was king in Detroit and the rest of Michigan. It warmed up with Mitch Ryder & Detroit, The Stooges and Rare Earth into the era of Grand Funk, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, and the Rockets, and ended with The Look, Rhythm Corps, Toby Redd, etc.

Here's a great site for rediscovering and listening to MP3s of hundreds of the bands that rocked Detroit in the 1980's. If you've never heard of this site...It's a pure Michigan Rock chest of gold!

Ah, moved out of Michigan five years ago, and it's been tough... no replicating the glorious Detroit scene!

Grand Rapids native here. My current MI fave raves are Outrageous Cherry, Pas-Cal and The Detroit Cobras. Liked the Waxwings a lot when they were still around.

I grew up in Toledo (Maumee actually) which is pretty much a suburb of Detriot. I grew up hearing a lot of the Nuge' on WIOT" toledo best rock" and sometimes RIFF (classic Detriot station). "Free for all", Workin' hard playin hard", "Dog eat dog",Stranglehold",Great white Buffalo" and of coarse that kick-ass Amboy Dukes song "Land inside of your mind" shit. His stuff is all great up to that "Wango-Tango" bullshit.

other greats
The Romantics
The Kingbees

early Segar is not as bad as "Like a Rock" either

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
