A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Okay, no one has taken a Stand and declared the Best Clash Song - ever.

Here's my vote:

White Riot, from the album The Clash, released in the UK April 8th, 1977

What do you think?

Wow - that's a very tough one. hmmmm.... Maybe White Man in Hammersmith Palais? Or Safe European Home? There are scores of contenders, really. We are, after all, talking about my favorite band of all time.
IMO All Lost in a Supermarket is number 1. Second would be Safe European Home as JB mentioned.
I mentioned Clampdown, but White Riot and London's Burning were right up there too. The first time I heard Lost in the Supermarket, I went to Guitar Center and bought a phaser for my pedal board just trying to get that sound. My other personal favorite is Atom Tan- yes Combat Rock had its moments that weren't on MTV.
"You been wearin' blue and brown" has been a running joke among friends since I was a teen. Love Clampdown.

My nod for best is London Calling. The opening is an anthem that gets your attention and never lets go, even after the final note.

Yeah Hateful,White Man,Crooked Beat,Rudie,Safe European Home,Gates Of The West....Kinda hard to narrow it down since like Jon,they are my favorite band of all time too.

Gates of the West is definitely a dark horse.  I heard a slowed down version sung by a guy names Adam Masterson and I finally realized how profound it was lyrically.

I've been reading "Route 19 Revisited", a book that details the recording of London Calling and goes track by track. Fascinating stuff.  Lots on Hateful and Rudie, as you might expect.

The studio version is quite fine, but several "alternative" live recordings of this song exist, and it is positively vicious.  You almost get cut with the ferocity.  I would put Wrong 'Um Boyo as Favorite 1A.

I like that tune--it has some different elements. It starts out Clash City Rockers-ish, and then goes Devo-ish, ends up  with a little southern rock. fun!

I don't know if The Clash is my favorite of all time (I'd need an entire weekend of meditation to really know that one) but it's up there. I am going to vote on the songs given here by other Clash fans. My fave album in entirety is Their first one, U.K. release

...and the winner is...

"Hateful" sugg. by Bob Stubbs.

Now my favorite disco song by The Clash is "Train in Vain." Did I piss off anyone yet? No? Here is the country version by Dwight Yoakum.

;)

The Clash's whole career was one big glorious F-you to the establishment, but if I had to single out one song I would go with "Death or Glory". Despite that song's assertion that everyone sells out eventually, the Clash never did ...

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
