Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Whats your favourite musical auto biography or biography you have read?

We all have that artists auot biography's or biography's we have read about who's story was so riveting you couldnt put it down. It would be great to hear everyones opinions on what they think is the best one they have read. For me so far unequalled is Sex, Thugs and Rock 'n' Roll by Billy Thorpe. His story was fascinating and showed the sixties in all its rock and roll glory. From mad sexcapdes to run ins with thugs from the sydney underworld to the loss of a close friend this book is fast packed from start to finish. Billy is such a great story teller he makes you believe he was the biggest musical artist in australia at that time which wasnt necessarily the case. Considering he doesnt even rank as one of my favourite artists yet the book leaves Slash by Anthony Bozza and Scar Tissue (Anthony Keidis) by Larry Sloman in its shadow, both artists of whom I am a fan shows how much I rate this book.

Tony Sheridan's "Up and Down With The Rolling Stones" -

Bizarre, sycophantic and decadent with a ring of truth nonetheless..

So far I have read Keith's "life" and bill's "rolling with the stones". I will have to keep my eye out for that one Tony.
You can't beat "The Dirt" by Motley Crue.  Page after page of rock and roll insanity.

Jon mate being that I am the worlds greatest tight arse that has been on my must read list for ages and even decided I will have to purchase it since it isnt in any of the regions libraries where I live. I just need to part with the cash now. If I buy it I will donate it to my local library and share the decadance with others.

'White Bicycles' by Joe Boyd. Another tale of the 60's as told by the Zelig-like tour manager/club manager/producer/etc... The chapter on Dylan's electric performance at Newport Folk Festival is fantastic.
I finished that not long ago... great stuff.  It's well-written, and more importantly well-remembered. The Dylan stuff, the Nick Drake stuff, the inside information on the machinations of the music industry when it was willing to take risks...I'd recommend it.

Some good 'popcorn' reads:

In terms of sheer entertainment value, you can't beat Miss Pamela Desbarres' "I'm With The Band: Confessions of a Groupie".  Not entirely sure how much is true, but the cast of characters is impressive and the events goofy and/or trashy enough to keep the pages turning.

I admit I was horribly entertained by "White Line Fever" by Lemmy. "Spinal Tap", only for real. I also enjoyed Nikki Sixx's "Heroin Diaries." Really don't care one way or another about the Crue, but it was a good read that didn't pull any punches.

Billy Thorpe book sounds very cool, Shermo! Will have to see if that was published in the US, or get it on my next trip to Oz.

Thats definitley one that gets good wraps Julie and I will have to keep an eye out for it. Pamela Desbarres is pretty famous and done what lots of girls only dreamed of doing in the seventies especialy where Led Zeppelin were concerned.

Iggy Pop's "I Need More: The Stooges and Other Stories"
I loved Jen Trynin's Everything I'm Cracked Up to Be.  Jen wrote it like a novel.  You really get to know her, get into her head as the music industry is swallowing her whole and then spitting her out.  It's a great read.
There are many. Dave Mustaine comes to mind right now.
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead :THe Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon by his ex wife Crystal Zevon...she writes  honestly and lovingly about Warren, who could be a class act and a first class A hole at times, mostly fueled as usual by his addictions. It was a great read, especially about the artists that came together to help with with his last effort, The Wind.

I totally met Michael Nesmith and I didn't pass out

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
