Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Everyone has that group that they carry the flame for--the album/disk that SHOULD be heard, but somehow got lost in the haze.  Let us all hear now!

One of my first criminally under-heard lp's is the debut by Darden Smith.  It is a gem, from the first cut to the end.   Kind of a folky/country disk, but this one is a slow rockin' blues song--"Day After Tomorrow."

The Wildhearts - "Earth -vs- The Wildhearts" (1993). Absolute Timeless Classic. Shoulda ruled the world. Great riffs. Great harmonies. Every song with an 'x ingredient' taking off the song off in an unexpected direction. And if for no other reason (and trust me, there are plenty) "My Baby is a Headfuck" includes Mick Ronson's very last recording (a great slide solo). When they first emerged, the preferred critical tagline was "Pantera meets The Beatles".... and it's not far off. I'd say also bit like "Cheap Trick meets Motorhead"..... great stuff indeed. they went on to do pretty solid business in Europe and the far east, but were never more than a passing fancy stateside. shame really.
And one of the best live bands live ever seen, too!
Agreed. I am fortunate to be friends with the band and have had the opportunity to see them several times through the years (Donington 94 was immense) as well as go on the road with them during their reunion tour 01. all I can say is WOW!... even though they are friends, they are also absolutely amazing and it is a shame that they are not stadium-fillers.
Great album. Although they were semi-popular, I'd say The Babys.
Yeah, I'd say the Babys were at least 1 hit wonders with "Back on My Feet Again"...and with the subsequent temporary hugeness of John Waite....not completely underdiscovered...
The Babys were kings, IMHO. They vere discovered on the surface only.

Mike. In regards to the Wildhearts those guys get massive reviews in classic rock magazine. I like Hanoi Rocks so will be really interested to see what the stuff Ginger is doing in Mike Monroes group will be like.

Thanks Heikki I will check those out. I am only a recent convert to Hanoi Rocks. I picked up "street poetry" for less than $10 and it has grown on me . The guitar is sensational and I see how slash was influenced by it. I am looking at buying the box set that gives you all the early albums. It looks like good value.

Sadly, Ginger will play his last gig w/ MM on June 17th. In addition to Hanoi box, I'd suggest Demolition 23 from mid 90's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsMrnCf4UnM There are lot of vids in the suggestions on the right hand side. Furthermore, out of MM's solo, I'd suggest Not Fakin' It. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xdt3vqHyT0&feature=related Enjoy.

After a day of you tubing the wildhearts ,Ginger and MM i can see myself adding some more albums to my collection. Thanks Heikki

At the risk of saying I told you so already here's my maiden blog post of sometime ago which got about as much reaction as the undiscovered gem itself got the first time round! Who says lightening doesn't strike twice?

Once again, fans of CCR, Love, Buffalo Springfield and many other greats from the golden period of RnR, will appreciate this totally overlooked gem from 1970: Louie & the Lovers H E R E.

Don't let the slightly naff and old fashioned name put you off, this is wonderful music.

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
