Eerie, the list of musicians who shed this mortal coil at age 27, ain't it?
Dave Alexander (Stooges)
Pet Ham (Badfinger)
Alan Wilson (Canned Heat)
Chris Bell (Big Star)
D. Boon (Minutemen)
Mia Zapata (The Gits, and maybe the most tragic on the list.)
Now Amy W.
RIP all of you.....
It is easy to dismiss Ms. Winehouse as another junkie/addict who slowly offed themselves...but in an era where talent is based upon "being famous" rather than actual ability (Vanilla Ice, anyone), Ms. Winehouse--in spite all of her excesses, was a tremendous singer. Back to Black was and remains my pick for best of the 2000's--and I hope to live long enough where I will hear another disk of the same quality. For another more in depth review of what I wanted to say, but am not as talented as this guy, see this essay:
If you are a non-believer, then view this from Jools Holland. Beyond marvelous.
Two other notable "27 Club" members:
Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (Canned Heat)
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (Grateful Dead)
