A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Listening to the Replacements classic "Alex Chilton" the other day, I wondered how many songs there are that specifically honor another artist.  I'm sure there are tons of 'em, but off the top of my head, here are a few I've got:

Alex Chilton - The Replacements

Hard Core Troubador - Steve Earle (maybe not specifically about Bruce Springsteen, but I read it that way)

Strummerville - Stiff Little Fingers

Jackie Wilson Said - Van Morrison

When Smokey Sang - ABC

Nightshift - Commodores (Marvin Gaye)

Dio - Tenacious D

What else ya got?

The lyrics to this song by The Wildhearts is just a list of the bands that influenced them - see how many you can spot!

Not too sure if it was in 'honour' but Neil Young gets a heavy namecheck in Sweet Home Alabama!
Another "non-honor" honor:

I've always thought "Sweet Home Alabama" was meant as a big "f--- you" to Neil in response to "Southern Man."
Belle and Sebastian "I'm A Cuckoo". Not only does it reference Thin Lizzy, but the song is brilliantly in the style of. And, there's the whole Irish connection.
David Bowie - "V-2 Schneider"
Thelonious Monster - "Sammy Hagar Weekend"
Even - "Bowie In My Dreams"
Apparently, Sammy has the song playing over the P.A. before he hits the stage.
Mr Wilson by The Hormones ( Great band and a fitting tribute to Brian)

Grant Hart by The Posies

Paul by Pushstart Wagon ( Great tribute to Mr Westerberg )
Love Love Love The Hormones. oft-overlooked irish-folk/pop almalgam... and little known fact..... in the "Ross and Emily's Wedding" episode of Friends, that The Hormones playing their b-side "tired old souls" (off of their "Stay Ahead" single). Would definitely recommend getting "Where Old Ghosts Meet". great stuff.
Totally agree about The Hormones Mike and a quick search of You Tube will also reveal Marc Carroll's first ? band Puppy Love Bomb doing " I'm Not Listening" Great Stuff !
Motorhead - "R.A.M.O.N.E.S."
L.E.O. - "alpacas orgling" (conscious channeling ELO by Bleu, Andy Sturmer, et al)
Danko Jones - "R.I.P. R.F.T.C."
Demolition 23 - "The Scum Lives On"
Redd Kross - "Shonen Knife"
Bob Marley and the Wailers "Punky Reggae Party"
Philip Lynott - Talk in '79 (where, I'm sure a young Ginger first picked up the premise of 29 x the pain)..
The Hellacopters - "Paul Stanley"
The Wondermints - "In And Around Greg Lake"
The Breakup Society - "Robin Zander"
The Replacements - "Something to Du"
The Replacements - "Johnny's Gonna Die"

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
