Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

I've been spending the week listening to Walk On by John Hiatt -- an album I loved when it came out but have long since forgotten.  I pulled it out and have been marveling at the craftsmanship of the thing.

I love rediscovering a great LP because it combines the freshness of something that's been outside of my brain for decades with the familiarity of songs you realize you can still sing along with.

So, what are some records you've rediscovered recently?

"Walk On" is one of my favorite Hiatt releases...so organic and, for the most part, joyful.

Lately, I've been pulling out old Pixies records.  With so many sort of whiny indie bands out there, it's great to hear some jammin' rock and roll. Surfer Rosa rules.

Ultraprophets of Thee Psykick Revolution and In Excelsior Dayglo from the band Christmas, and Chopping Down the Family Tree by My Dad is Dead. Oh, and Youth of America from the Wipers. Must be that ever-increasing rich-to-poor ratio that's had me nostalgic for the 1980s....
The Wipers!  Yeah, that's a perfect candidate for rediscovery.  Off to dig through the Cds....
It's been a great listen - I remember first hearing "When it's Over" the year it came out, which was the first semester I was at Berklee College. Everyone was playing the title track, but that whole bombastic, rip-roaring instrumental - with the piano - just knocked my socks off.
Richard Hell and the Voidoids "Blank Generation" was the latest one for me.  I ran across a youtube vid of Love Comes in Spurts, and thought "Crap! I forgot how awesome this is."   Immediately picked up that record, and it's been in heavy rotation for like a month and a half.  I love new old music!

This topic is fresh in my weekend also.  I had long ago lost the love for Bruce Springsteen.  I once though his records were magical, always to be enjoyed at 11.  Now, well, hit the forward button--until I saw the documentary of the making of Darkness on Edge of Town a couple of days back.   Now Darkness, and his other stuff regained the color that had bled from them, and I once again marveled at what a band the E Street Band is, and what a song writer Springsteen is.  "Badlands" has enjoyed repeated listenings...just to hear Roy Bittan's piano part--and now knowing that Springsteen hummed the Big Man's sax part to him!

(Also recently, bought the rereleased/remastered Pete Townsend "Who Came First"...my that was FINE!)

It is wonderful that the material that you were once "tired" of regains that immediacy that it once enjoyed.

fIREHOSE "ragin full on" and "if'n". I think I prefer them (looking cautiously over my shoulder) over the minutemen.
Speaking of Who solo albums, I listened to "Whistle Rhymes" and "Rigor Mortis Sets In" a couple weeks ago for the first time in a long time...John Entwistle wrote some great stuff! Pete cast a huge shadow, but John was a major talent in his own right.
take that shit back!

i've been rediscovering all kinds of stuff as i'm in the process of ripping hundreds of old cd's. so excited to get an ipod that holds ALL my entire music collection. the reason i haven't listened to a bunch of them is it's too much of a pain in the ass to drag them out of storage... anyway, buffalo tom's big red letter day and let me come over are favorite rediscoverys of mine. paul westerberg 14 songs sounds pretty damn good, too.

there's also a bunch i'm ripping that i wore out back in the 90's. didn't have as much disposable income or as expansive music tastes and so i'd wind up listening to stuff over and over. pixies and frank black spring to mind.

Paul Westerberg's "14 Songs"-- love that record. "Come Feel Me Tremble" is a gem, too.

Here's a suggestion for anyone looking to rediscover a gem:

Folks tend to focus more on East Side Story because that's when Squeeze broke commercially in the States but, for my money, Argybargy was their apex.  Pull it out, give it a listen and see if you dont agree....

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
