A Global Army of Veteran Rockers
I've been spending the week listening to Walk On by John Hiatt -- an album I loved when it came out but have long since forgotten. I pulled it out and have been marveling at the craftsmanship of the thing.
I love rediscovering a great LP because it combines the freshness of something that's been outside of my brain for decades with the familiarity of songs you realize you can still sing along with.
So, what are some records you've rediscovered recently?

Lately, I've been pulling out old Pixies records. With so many sort of whiny indie bands out there, it's great to hear some jammin' rock and roll. Surfer Rosa rules.

Permalink Reply by Stan Schwieger on March 28, 2011 at 7:02pm This topic is fresh in my weekend also. I had long ago lost the love for Bruce Springsteen. I once though his records were magical, always to be enjoyed at 11. Now, well, hit the forward button--until I saw the documentary of the making of Darkness on Edge of Town a couple of days back. Now Darkness, and his other stuff regained the color that had bled from them, and I once again marveled at what a band the E Street Band is, and what a song writer Springsteen is. "Badlands" has enjoyed repeated listenings...just to hear Roy Bittan's piano part--and now knowing that Springsteen hummed the Big Man's sax part to him!
(Also recently, bought the rereleased/remastered Pete Townsend "Who Came First"...my that was FINE!)
It is wonderful that the material that you were once "tired" of regains that immediacy that it once enjoyed.

Permalink Reply by billsifer on March 30, 2011 at 1:49pm i've been rediscovering all kinds of stuff as i'm in the process of ripping hundreds of old cd's. so excited to get an ipod that holds ALL my entire music collection. the reason i haven't listened to a bunch of them is it's too much of a pain in the ass to drag them out of storage... anyway, buffalo tom's big red letter day and let me come over are favorite rediscoverys of mine. paul westerberg 14 songs sounds pretty damn good, too.
there's also a bunch i'm ripping that i wore out back in the 90's. didn't have as much disposable income or as expansive music tastes and so i'd wind up listening to stuff over and over. pixies and frank black spring to mind.

Folks tend to focus more on East Side Story because that's when Squeeze broke commercially in the States but, for my money, Argybargy was their apex. Pull it out, give it a listen and see if you dont agree....
