A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Jon, really loved the Frank Turner interview, nice work there.

He's a guy who needs to be checked out by anybody who digs Billy Bragg (e.g.) although he's a bit lighter than that in terms of lyrics-wise, etc.....a few songs about his drinking problem, etc ;>)

I saw him in the opening slot for Social Distortion that is mentioned in there.

Up here (and maybe everywhere..) it was a triple-header- Turner/Lucero/Social D

Full disclosure:  I have all the Social D albums and dig them just fine, but in terms of what I dig...I was predisposed to saying this going in.....but it is true:

Lucero and Frank both kicked Social D's ass.

The Long Winters

Anybody here dig?  They've been around appox the whole 2000s and have 3 albums and an ep out at least, but I'm only getting around to them now.

Really loving all of it.

For fans of Pavement, Modest Mouse, Creeper Lagoon, Muzzle etc. .....

Dr. Dog

Check' em out.  Already a really deep canon, all great stuff...I've previously only dabbled, but getting in deeper now and it's really hitting home.

Fans of My Morning Jacket and Fleet Foxes are sure to dig it....

Don't know how long this will be up, but listen to the live stream of the reunited Guided By Voices show from Sasquatch Fest here:

For some excellent lo fi Britpop, check out Pete and the Pirates and related project Tap Tap

For a couple similar sounding great acts from VT and NH, check out:

-The Capstan Shafts

-Jason Anderson

Man I have no idea why this appears to be skipping the NYC area (so far)...but it looks like them may have some time to add a date pre Sept 6 (they are in the UK on aug 28)...but if you get a chance GO SEE The National!

With Yo La Tengo opening....

This R.E.M. "Deluxe Reissues" phenomenon (with bulked up, bonus discs, etc) has been possibly the greatest thing that has happened to music for all time.

Now playing the recently issued Lifes Rich Pageant version, but all the the first 4 have been excellent beyond belief.

Just stunning, what a band.  You can make an easy case that R.E.M. is the greatest American rock band ever (and by like perhaps a million miles...).   They're not even MY favorite band (that would be the Replacements)....but when these records are on, even I have to admit that maybe the Replacements did not quite make masterpieces like this....

Was thinking of getting Fables and Life's Rich Pageant for the demos/outtakes. How's the remastering and packaging-especially on the first two?

The alternate takes are all fantastic, Thomas.

I'm unqualified to comment on either the mastering or the packaging, as I only have (to make as a comparison) my original vinyl from the 80s vs. listening now via Rhapsody not on CD, streaming....not the best....but it all sounds great to me.

I loved the live shows included with the first 2 Deluxe reissues, but the Fables and LRP bonus material is all top notch...

Remember this song?

Public Service Statement of the Obvious:  If you dig Superchunk (at all) you need to be listening to Portastatic.

So much great music there.
