R&R Hall HOF Announces Inductees

Yeah, I know. Whatever.

Anyway, here they be:

I find it hard to work up much passion either way. Guess it's nice that Donovan and the Small Faces/Faces get some love. Still no Cheap Trick, NY Dolls, Deep Purple, MC5, Black Flag, etc, etc, etc, etc.

At this point, those bands are probably better off not being in, I think. The notion of Henry Rollins & co. performing in front of a bunch of middle aged record execs in tuxedos, while amusing to consider, would probably just make me sick.

Not a very exciting list. The only one that sticks in my craw is G`n'R, though. Bleah!

Down with the Small/Faces and Tom Dowd... but G'n'R, RHCP? You can rationalize Laura Nyro or Donovan, I guess, but is it rock and roll?

I think Nyro and Donovan are legit -- folk rock is still rock. Glyn Johns is a nice choice. RHCP are in for longstanding commercial success. I'm not a fan, but they get in in the same way, say, Bob Seger does.

GnR is an interesting case. They made one astoundingly great record and that was pretty much that.

Bands with one great record make sense if that record was transformational -- Sex Pistols come to mind. GnR, though, didn't really transform anything, apart from putting the other 80's metal bands to shame. Once grunge came along, it's not as if the charts were filled with bands that worshipped at the feet of Appetite for Destruction. GnR was the grand finale to a movement, not the spark of a new one.

So yeah, I wouldn't put them in, much as I love that record.

I think its great to see the small faces/faces nominated. I can live with GNR getting in as there was a time when they were the biggest rock band on the planet if only for a short while and also because I have all of thier albums,though that is not hard. I dont think they should get in at the expense of plenty of other great acts that havent been inducted yet like Deep Purple who were already mentioned for example.

GNR have been (kinda-sorta) threatening to make another great record for a long time: maybe the committee (a bunch that's highly invested in the fortunes of the industry) is praying that the induction will prod Axl to get his shit together and release the hit rock album they so desperately need.

I suspect the Pistols were inducted under duress, just because it would make the institution look ludicrous if they weren't. They've probably also sold enough to achieve some sort of commercial parity: with nearly 40 years of sales on "Bollocks", EMI/Virgin/A&M have made their money back. If influence and musical credibility were the only factors, even with short-lived bands, they should induct the MC5 and Television, but they won't...

Jule considering your location, I doubt this is news to you, but this goes for EVERYONE:

If you get a chance to go to one of the Bob Mould Band shows (the recent trio starring Jon Wurster and Jason Narducy) you absolutely must go.

The setlist is pretty much exactly what you'd get if you got to make it up yourself, just a great-hits survey of Du + Sugar + some classics from Black Sheets of Rain and Workbook....WITH some newer material that also works, but the old classics you need were all there.

Me too, but if "Rock & Roll" is the criteria, I'd give the nod to Axl and Co. That seems to be the biggest issue with most folks complaining about the Hall. Maybe they should just rename it? How about the Popular Music Hall of Fame?
