NOT LAME of course

Of course, Not Lame is fantastic but also quite focused. And quite a bit more than its founder, I believe.

For general purposes, I find the following (in conjunction w/ allmusic.com & amazons) the best.

http://rateyourmusic.com/

Not much of great writing or news but reviews by different people and viewpoints which is always good, I suppose.

Great writing and news I usually find on Classic Rock Magazine. But they're reasonably focused, too.
For all things Beatle....

my favorite site is David Lowery's (lead singer of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven): http://300songs.com/

I like to think my own (record reviews with an intensely personal spin) site is pretty cool as well: http://mylifeinreview.net
Great minds and all that...

I just found your site through you linking to me - thanks for the props Julie!

If a good site for music is what you're looking for, check out guitars101.com. It's a great site not just because it's geared towards musicians, but for the forums specifically set for music discussion. My personal favourite though, are the video & audio bootleg forums. They even have a separate forum dedicated strictly towards Elvis boots & one for Van Halen boots. TONS of stuff, most of it 70s & 80s concerts! I've been a member since 2007 & I am still surprised by hidden gems on the forums! Membership is free & you can even meet other musicians & collaborate with them! Definitely my pick for best site!

While far from essential reading, it's funny:

"It's truly incredible, how his attitude seems to have changed. He PERFORMED with the remaining Monkees, something I swear he said he would never do again after the '80s. It is baffling. As for the meeting, he was so gracious and answered…"

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
