Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Over the weekend, I peeked out my front window to see a curious sight.  My mailman was standing behind my Dodge truck, taking a picture of the tailgate with a digital camera.

I feared the worst - that he had backed his mail truck into my truck.  So I yelled to him from the front porch.  "Everything okay?"

"Yeah - I just wanted a picture of this." Turns out he just thought some of the stuff I had on the back of my truck was cool.

When I was a teenager, nothing was subtle.  Slobbering Pantera fan?  The logo was all over your locker, your jacket, your car and everything else you owned.  These days, though, I have kids.  The notion of kicking ass has to be communicated subtly - almost like speaking in code the kids won't pick up on.

I have a small Van Halen logo on the back window of my truck.  You wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it.  I also have a Flying Spaghetti Monster badge where most people would put a Jesus fish.  Again - unless you were looking for it, you'd probably not notice it.  I think this is what the mailman was photographing, but I'm not sure.

My buddy has a border around a room in his basement.  You need to look at it closely before you realize that it's an amalgamation of Led Zeppelin album covers.  His kids probably think it's just a bunch of paintings strung together, or they probably don't pay much attention to it at all.  Someone from our generation walks in, though, and it's an immediate conversation-starter.

What do you do to subtly communicate to the kick-ass masses?

Well, I started a social network for other kickass people.

Not especially subtle, I guess. :)
Now, THIS is a interesting question.

And my answer, as co-founder of The Rock And Roll Tribe, is.....'uh, only you can answer that.'. How's that for being evasive?

The reason why is the answer ends up being a personal one, but I think it IS an good one to ask because when you push that kick-ass attitude("hey, i'm digging being alive and being a rocker - no apologies!") out there to others, something happens that benefits all. It's a contagion that infects in a really positive manner.

For me, part of my own personal answer is just being willing to say 'screw it - I don't care what others think' and saying something in a discussion that surprises, disarms most people's expectations of what they they think they'll hear w/ an answer to a question just because I have to change things up to keep myself interest in pretty much anything. I do that w/o thinking as it's just part of who I am(and, trust me, plenty of stupid things come out many times).

Kick-ass-to-the-masses, imho, is done just by being you - it's that inner, core grounding of who you are and being comfortable in that place. maybe when others talk about you, they drop in the word 'cool' for example. "He's a really cool dude/chick." - What the hell does 'cool' mean, anyway? Who knows but it points to something where you're every so slightly(or 'not so slightly') out step with what much of society expects you to do, quite possibly. Why makes one 'cool'? Many reasons, but, for me, one of the important ones is that you totally comfortable with who you are and don't really put on any pretense to impress or show up others - you just rock on your own because that is all you know how to do - and that shines.

Oh yeah, wear your Mott The Hoople reunion shirt out in public, too. ;-P Okay, so that is not so subtle but to be more practical: Tom what makes you rock is you do stuff that is just being true to your rocking self.

You are not getting old, you are getting ROCK.

Hey, I'd love for you take a picture of that border your friend did and share it here - that sounds like something other Tribe folks may want to check out....He needs to join The Tribe, get him on board! (nice article in today's Wall Street Journal on Robert Plant's "Band Of Joy" band he's put together w/ guys from his band before Led Zep)

Well, if I'm true to my rockin' self in my own neighborhood, the tendency of the helicopter parents who dominate my neighborhood will be to render judgment. And that judgment is likely to be "we ought not to let the kids go play over at THAT guy's house."

I'm only half kidding.

I'll try to snap a pic of it next time I visit him. I tried to find it online, but no luck - it's entirely possible he had it done as a custom job, as he knows a sign guy pretty well and has given me things like custom decals as gifts in the past.

Could be a while, though. My wife is really pregnant with kid #2 and I don't get out much these days. :-)
Ahhhhh, I know that feeling - gotta make time for your rock 'n roll buddies as you strategically can manage w/ a pregnant wife, though! :-D

I work at a dot-com with people half my age. When I drop the Doves, Spoon, or Elbow into a conversation, they are stunned. Keeping myself exposed to new music kicks ass. Oh - and I ride my bike to work most of the time.
Hell, I don't find too many over 40 who think Spoon is cool. One of my favorite indie bands, bar none. They just geek me out, incredible sideway, quirky hooks, hyper-ventilating stop-starts, outrageous production, buried, layered sounds that have some sort of NLP-y effect and a 'don't give a rip what you think' attitude.

They just have *worked* for me from Day One....

hahaa.. as a 40 year old living in Amsterdam i also only communicate my 'innerworld' through the stickers on my corporate bike..

these days a silent protest to the nitwits in Holland. I'm a Linkse Hobby, i tell them with my red bikesticker.

Love your mailman by the way. (was he an old or young mailman?)
Your in the land and city of one of my favorite bands for the last 28 years - THE NITS.

I own pretty much everything (at least what I am aware of and it's a LOT), including solo and side projects. Henk is a genius and the band's catalog of work never ceases to move me.
wowie..! Well.. greetings from the Dutch Mountains then ;)

I do think Henk grew up and still lives in my area, Amsterdam Oost, East.

I Suppose that when we go Internationally with the Events at RocknRoll Tribe, we will have to throw a Nits concert of some kind :D
