Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

I had to go to the dreaded MALL and found myself assaulted with Christmas music while shopping. The most depressing part: it was November 1, a full 55 days before Xmas.

This is my least favorite time of year for public music, because of the endless repeats of the same schmaltzy holiday music.  "Wonderful Christmastime" especially makes me want to whack radio programmers upside the head.

Now, I have no personal intention of listening to any Xmas music until maybe 5 days before the actual holiday, but when I do, what's going to keep me in the holiday spirit instead of making me want to go all Grinch on everyone?

Well, I take my chances by embedding one of the most surrealistic performance of a Xmas song. Could it serve as a cue for a piece of music that does blow? Will remove it fast if you insist.

Wow. I'm speechless.
Wow. That is Wrong.

That is only thing that could come close to that is the absolutely inexplicable Bowie/Bingster Christmas duet.

If forced at the threat of some sort of really heinous slow death, I would listen to The Roches Christmas disk. The Roches make that stuff as enjoyable as possible.

As for smacking the X-mas music programmer, I would nominate "Holly Jolly Christmas."
Good lord... cannot unsee....

You know,  this is just about the only holiday song I will reliably listen to every year, despite being severely religion-challenged. Of course, having been hung up on Chilton since about '81, that makes sense.

It's joyous and genuinely pretty, everything a holiday tune should be.

I sincerely like the following tune. Be holiday, or not. Written by Robbie Robertson after the birth of his son.

Hadn't heard that song before-would definitely play it year round.
One of my favorite Christmas albums is "Mersey Christmas" by The Spongetones....it's not exactly tight but here's a clip of them live w/ "Sleigh Bells".

Awesome Christmas music? My favourite tunes are the instrumental guitar compilations Merry Axemas Vol. 1 & 2. You want truly amazing, these discs have guys like Alex Lifeson & Steve Stevens cranking out the holiday hits! Ted Nugent's rendition of Deck The Halls is not to be missed!

Trans-Siberian Orchestra has some OK stuff too...
seconded on the Merry Axemas discs - the Eric Johnson "First Nowell" and Steve Vai's "Christmastime is Here" are my faves. Also Stu Hamm's rollicking "Sleigh Ride"~

One of my favorite Detroit bands in the 80's, the Hysteric Narcotics, did a great cover of it too. They had great holiday shows, which usually included a fantastic cover of the Choir's "It's Cold Outside". Unfortunately, their version isn't Youtubed. Here's the original.

Oh yeah, and that's the light show from the Grande Ballroom, if anyone follows Deetroit music history.
