Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Most of us here at the RRT are old enough to have gone through multiple formats.  I know that I have bought vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD and now mp3 and m4a.  I never bought reel to reel or mini disc and have yet to buy flac or any other digital format.  Anyway, I bet most of you can remember the first Compact Disc you purchased (I sure as heck couldn't tell you the first digital download I bought was).  So what was it?

For me it was:

It was 1989. I was in the Navy and had just had my car broken into and all of my cassettes stolen. On payday, I bought a Sony Discman and that CD and it was the only one I had till the next payday. I listened to that disc every night to fall asleep, and I don't think I ever heard the whole thing-- ever.

I remember the first one I played....which was the Pretenders debut...my friends and I had "borrowed" the new technology of the cd player and Pretenders disk from the radio station we worked at and threw it on at max volume in my very high powered home stereo.

The next thing I remember hearing was a wonderful sound of the disk kicking in, and then.......Psssssssst.  The sound of my ADS tweeters frying.   That was it for them.

Bastards still remind me of that to this day.

My first 8 track...Born to Run...First CD...same thing...

I remember purchasing 3 on the same day (1989), after my wife bought me a CD player for Christmas:

Last Vinyl:  John Hiatt - Stolen Moments

First  CD: Replacements - All Shook Down

That's a great Dramarama album there Dennis

"It's truly incredible, how his attitude seems to have changed. He PERFORMED with the remaining Monkees, something I swear he said he would never do again after the '80s. It is baffling. As for the meeting, he was so gracious and answered…"

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
