Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Let's assume that you would have sun charging batteries on your media player with space for no more than just one album. Between a rock and a hard place, what would be the single disc by a single artist that would keep you company on a desert island?

It may not be the best album you've ever heard but the chances are that it would be the only album you will ever hear - repeatedly.

Tough decision but mine would be the following. Share yours with fellow Tribers!

After some serious thought, I think I'd go with BADFINGER's Wish You Were Here. This stunning album, produced by Chris Thomas, still sounds fresh and vital today (36 years after it's release). While I love Straight Up and No Dice (two of their four Apple albums), they sound definitely 'of their time' (and a great time it was!). But Wish You Were Here (and I'm still referring to the Badfinger album) was a tremendous leap forward for the quartet. It was an absolute shame that the album was pulled from the shelves, Joey Molland quit the band and Pete Ham committed suicide (in that order). If you've never heard the album, it's a Pop/Rock lover's dream come true. Stunning from start to finish. I never tire of this album.... and I've heard it hundreds of times.
Chris Freakin' Thomas. What a resume!

Never Mind the Bollocks...The Pretenders...Roxy Music...Tom Robinson Band,,,Pete Townshend...

A true unsung hero of rock and roll!
Good call Jon.

Chris Thomas is officially the "Forrest Gump of Rock & Roll".

In his early 20's, he played on The Beatles' White Album. He contributed to "Happiness Is a Warm Gun, played mellotron on "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", piano on "Long, Long, Long" and "Savoy Truffle", and the anthemic harpsichord riff on "Piggies"!!

He also took on mixing duties with Pink Floyd for The Dark Side of the Moon.

In his spare time, he mixed and produced albums for Elton John & Paul McCartney.

This man need to write a book.
Here's the Chris Thomas story in his own words. Great stuff:

Jon, this guy has to be nominated for your new Hall - you can't make a career like this up!
We're gonna have a wing for producers, managers, journalists and assorted rock and roll characters. That'll happen after the 4 artists for the year are inducted.
Wait......it was 'pulled'? So, how can I get the album....sounds like something I would dig?
I dunno what was pulled. Maybe at that time it was. Anyhow, I've got Wish You Were Here. So does Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Wish-You-Were-Here-Badfinger/dp/B00000885H. I've ditched some Badfinger albums and retained others. This belongs to latter category. Interestingly enough I've also retained Straight Up, No Dice (and Magic Christian Music).
The first album from The Clash. And I'll have to take the US release owing to the addition of Complete Control and White Man in Hammersmith Palais. Joe's raw, passionate vocals and Mick's guitar licks, woke me out of my teenage doldrums and still inspire me over 30 years later.

After that, umm, The Wild The Innocent sure looks good, of course Born To Run is oh so strong, and Graham Parker's first two albums were amazing, and Moondance, Layla, The Velvet Underground and Nico, this is too bloody difficult!
An interesting Clash possibility is Sandinista. It's hardly my favorite Clash record (it ranks 4th as a matter of fact) but it's chock full of varied music. Since you gotta spend the rest of your life listening to one record, it makes sense to go that route. Wanna hear some reggae today? You got it. Some straight up rock and roll? Got it? Some sugary pop? Yep. Some whatever-the-hell-Lose-This-Skin-is? Got it.

Strummer said that he made Sandinista thinking about some guy on an oil rig in the North Sea who only had one record to play and wanted variety. In that regard, he was successful.
It has to be something that would stand up to repeated listening. I'd pick Trout Mask Replica.
I agree with Trout Mask Replica. Some days I hate and some days I LOVE it. However I never under estimate its genius!!!

So Mike Nesmith. Yeah. WTF, right? Private, reclusive, mysterious for many years. A couple of years back, he got on Facebook and he posts long, winding tales about himself, his dogs, his home, his past, and a really lovely Mother's Day post last weekend. Photos go up. The whole thing. It's like he disappeared and then came back on his own terms. I didn't know how to take it. I'm a huge Monkees fan, no doubt. And, being a woman/girl of a certain age, I have a favorite and that favorite is Mike.…See More
