Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Although not quite often, sometimes the definitive version of a specific song is not the original version. Obviously, much more often covers are not worthy. Let me start the challenge with a couple of covers that I feel surpass the originals.

Jimi Hendrix over Dylan

Johnny Cash over Nine Inch Nails

Nine year old Sheila Behman w/ Langley School Music Project over The Eagles

Of course, the superiority in general is arguable. And I'm not saying that the originals were bad. These poignant interpretations anyhow brought something different out of already great compositions.

I return to my Joe Cocker over Randy Newman theme, not because I think that Randy Newman is not capable. I do--in fact, I view Mr. Newman as an all time great. However, I prefer Mr. Cocker's read on this song:

Mr. Cocker surely is a great cover artist.
what about the Tom Jones version? some of us south of 50 still want to throw our panties on stage at the sound of that! I saw him on 60 minutes recently...wow, still sexy...and my MOM was into him! I love the full monty soundtrack...i actually saw that movie in the theatres about 4 times...

I am surprised that Mr. Cocker does not make women want to take off items of clothing and pitch them toward him.  :]

Early American punk rock masters! THE DICKIES!

This totally rocked, I can remember how much I liked this when I was working in a record store back in the day.

The Who's version of Fortune Teller. WAY better than the original.

Young Man Blues, Shakin' All Over or Summertime Blues are not bad either. One of the definitive live albums.

Amen to this, Heikki.

Perusing the old posts in here, b/c I feared I was about to repeat myself.

For the Pink Floyd fans, "Fearless" done by Gerald Collier is pretty great (as are all his orignal tunes..)

You Light Up My Life (Debby Boone) done by the Lone Cowboys rules...

Nouvelle Vague sexifying Dead Kennedy's 'Too Drunk to Fuck'.
