Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Although not quite often, sometimes the definitive version of a specific song is not the original version. Obviously, much more often covers are not worthy. Let me start the challenge with a couple of covers that I feel surpass the originals.

Jimi Hendrix over Dylan

Johnny Cash over Nine Inch Nails

Nine year old Sheila Behman w/ Langley School Music Project over The Eagles

Of course, the superiority in general is arguable. And I'm not saying that the originals were bad. These poignant interpretations anyhow brought something different out of already great compositions.

Jimi's is indeed the best, but have you listened to the Alan Bown's version? Jimi and the Experience reportedly heard their set, including their take on the Dylan tune, and were inspired to amp it up even more. The Alan Bown's cover is definitely the "missing link" between Dylan and Hendrix.

VoiVod!
It one of the best Pink Floyd covers I've heard, But i gotta go with the original.
Always liked Patti Smith's version of "So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star" over the Byrds.

Agreed! That's a good one, and I like the original too, but Patti sounds more like she still believe in that fantasy, whereas McGuinn sounds like he's already moved past the desire.

I reckon Muse did a reasonably good and fresh (and vastly different, because carbon copies do not qualify) version of Feeling Good

Jeff Buckley over Leonard Cohen.

Jeff Buckley beats also Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt and Elkie Brooks and all the rest that have given a shot.

Personally I like Rufus Wainright's version best:

Hadn't heard this. Not a huge fan of Rufus but this seems to work fine. Somehow reminds me of one of my absolute faves, namely Czars. See http://rockandrolltribe.com/forum/topics/underdiscovered-1?id=58626... <Come to think of it, maybe not really but somehow still.

Killdozer's For Ladies Only pretty much says it all for me.

Wow! I never thought the killdozer version would be even more stoner rock than the original. It almost sounds like Anitseen. Now on my to buy list.
