I will admit to becoming a lazy listener in my latter days. Back when we put the record on the turntable and listened to every song, flipped it and repeated, my favorite song on any given album was the gem hidden in the middle on side 2.

Now, with time constraints, If something doesn't grab me in the first notes I'm flipping the next button. Artists that I could love more, need to study up more would include Todd Rundgren and Elvis Costello,( beyond the initial ear grabbers.)

I also resolve to be more open to new stuff most often referred by the best musical gurus anywhere, here on the tribe.

Gail, I'm begging you to drop everything right now (within reason) and just start listening to as much Todd Rundgren as you can.

You can't go wrong with anything released in say 1982 and prior, but start with the A Wizard A True Star album.

Maybe avoid or leave for last the Utopia 1, s/t album.

That's a very different Utopia that the later 4-piece that churned out lots of pop-ish hits, this one has 3 keyboard players and is his most proggish/maybe indulgent bit from back then.

LOL...there are several lists online that have this album cover as worst album covers ever.  I have since hidden my copy:^)

Blasphemy, I know:  The Beach Boys

Brian Wilson is one of the most over-rated artists of the last...FOURTY years. 

NO argument - from 1965-1970, created, conceived and birthed some ofthe most beautiful music ever heard in rock 'n roll.   From there, sporadic, sprawled splatterings of inconsistent tortured, unfocused and unrefined genius.

Some amazing, excellent songs on many albums post-70 but it's always been a shell represenatation of his best work in that 6 year period.

I agree.  I listen.  I think it is nice.  Perhaps revolutionary for the time.  But I have never gotten a ZANG from Little Deuce Coupe or Good Vibrations.

I loved those early Beach Boys years - as a kid.

But they never aged well once I was a teenager, too. Nice, happy, chippy songs - but in terms of higher song-craft, 1963-1965 don't provide structure to the argument of Wilson being the insanely regarded genius that most music fans make him out to be.

FINE - what he did in the periods I mentioned - '66-'70...automatically Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame accomplishments....but someone make a case for what followed there?  I"m open to listen but noting  a few amazing songs pasted inside sub-mediocre albums he was responsible for sheparding and marshaling greatness inside of, aren't going to sway me.

Agree with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys as well. Saw a funny interview with Noel Gallagher regarding favorite bands/albums and the host mentioned “Pet Sounds”. Noel responded with a “why?” and went on to describe them as barbershop quartet music.

Noel Gallagher?  Really?!  Are we now quoting that talentless twat on the - no less - undisputed greatness of "Pet Sounds" (THE best album ever!)  Pfffttt!

At least, the Beach Boys were nearly a music genre on their own while Oasis merely copied one...over and over and over.
