Rock and Roll Tribe

A Global Army of Veteran Rockers

Having come of age in the punk era, I certainly took a "with us/against us" stance when it came to music.  As such, I routinely dismissed numerous artists for lack of "righteousness" cred.

Now that I'm much more open minded, I've revisited some of these artists and have found that, in many cases, I was wrong.  They're good and I missed out.  I've corrected that by adding them to my collection.

Here are a few of mine -- what are yours?

1. Eddie Money.  Good honest rock and roll.  Solid hooks and well played.  Great driving music.

2. Billy Squier.  Yeah, I know.  That video.  But it shouldn't overshadow his music, which is fun, singalong power rock. Sure it's Zep-lite, but so what.  Is that any worse than being Beatles-lite? And lots of Beatles-lite bands are beloved as hell.

3. Cinderella.  They deserve much better than to be tossed into the hair metal waste bin.  Great songs, killer vocals and hard as nails.  Terrible name, good band.

Addendum:  Bands I was right about then and am right about now - Bon Jovi, Styx, Kansas, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon.

OK then, which artists have given you reason to turn a 180?

Bob Dylan. When I was a kid, I was one of those people who used to say "THAT GUY CANT SING!"....UNTIL I started listening to WHAT he was saying and where it all came from. That did it for me. Complete 180. - Egg
Plus, the world is filled with "Dylan is God" acolytes, and it's hard for any performer to live up to that. He's had a comically inconsistent career, but I really appreciate that he's always willing to go out on a limb -- even if its the wrong limb. Neil Young is like that too.
Iron Maiden- never liked them until in the past year I started to listen to some stuff- Heavy, tight, melodic, proggy. What's not to like?
If they weren't a multi-platinum band, they'd be cult gods with way more critical love than they get. I'm sure they don't care about that, though, as Bruce pilots them around the world in their own personal jet!
Hey Bob how cud you of not liked maiden?? Dont really know many rock fans who dont like em!!!
I fell in love wi them way back in the number of the beast days and love the way they have evolved over the years, being almost proggy now!!!
Least you were converted eventually!!!!
Up the irons!!!
Nothing kicks ass more than Number of the Beast. Not now...not ever. Period!
If my memory serves me I really used to like The Smiths. Now I just cannot stand them at all. Can't quite get my head around why, though. I've given 'em a lot of chances. Even bought and sold their 1st album three times. It cannot be Morrissey's voice and phrasing (only) 'cause I still love Everyday is like Sunday by him. Just an example that you can be "wrong" about s'thing in different ways. I'm gladly wrong about the Smiths 'cause I cannot put it right, I'm afraid. And who cares, The Smiths don't need me either. Hmmm, let me think about examples the other way around like Jon intented, I reckon. Television is an odd one that I've had mixed feelings about. Pendulum is still swinging. Sold Marquee Moon vinyl once and bought it back on CD later. So far, I have retained it. I just might like it. It's a classic, isn't it. But is Tom Verlaine a bit too personal as a singer... Could be more like 360 than 180, I guess.
I have an odd relationship with Television, 'cause my love for them is really based only on one record (Marquee Moon). I was never moved by anything else they did. So, do I love Television, or do I just love Marquee Moon?

Same deal with Wilco. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one of my all time favorite albums, but I'm lukewarm at best about everything else from them.
I do appreciate your point on Wilco. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot really stands out. For me, it is the only one I'm not in love with...
YHF is where Wilco lost me. I liked everything up to it - YHF was a shambles for - I didn't like the noise weaving in out of the music.
Also the band was breaking up at this point (between Tweedy and Bennett) - I guess for some it made good music for others not so good. But everything changes....
That's the sign of an interesting work of art, is it not? Some people love it dearly, others dislike it passionately. No one's ambivalent. I imagine that's exactly what Tweedy wanted.
Funny, I was going to put down Television, but didn't because I consider them really a one-trick pony.

Wilco, funny. I actually think Being There is their best record and everything after was a lot more Tweedy and less of the band. It appeared to me they started heading down "Tweedy Highway" after that record and that seemed to be a one way street in my mind...
